What is API in e-commerce and what is it used for?
API (Application Programming Interface) is a set of rules and protocols that enable communication between different systems and applications. In the context of e-commerce and B2B platforms, API plays a key role in enabling integration of the store with external tools such as ERP, CRM, payment systems, marketing automation platforms or logistics tools.
Thanks to API, it is possible to create a cohesive and flexible sales environment where data flows automatically, eliminating the need for manual data entry. For example, when a customer places an order in an online store, API can automatically send data to the warehouse, issue an invoice in the accounting system and notify the customer of delivery status.
API also opens the door to modern solutions such as headless commerce, where the front-end (the layer visible to the user) is separated from the back-end and everything communicates via API. This enables the creation of flexible, fast and innovative shopping experiences, tailored to different channels – from online store to mobile applications or marketplaces.
A well-designed API increases business scalability, facilitates international expansion and enables rapid response to market changes. It is one of the most important elements of the technical infrastructure of modern e-commerce.
